What I’m Reading Wednesdays

This week I’m reading The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb! It is an absolutely exceptional novel and a book I’ve been waiting to read for quite some time. I first fell for Mr. Lamb’s novels when I read I Know This Much Is True, which is in my top 10 favourite books, but sometimes when you read an additional novel by a favourite you feel let down. Not here. The book is, in a large part, about the tragedy at Columbine High School but it is about more than that, it’s about our history, our traumas, our relationships and the context in which we live our lives.

2011 so far, has been a year of great books!

What are you reading this week?

I’m reading Room! Your suggestion has been added to my list of books to read!

I love the video you posted FT! Thanks for always making my day brighter!

  2. Elizabeth says:

I also wanted to say, I love the cover of the book!

  3. Fitzy says:

Ooh, I’ve read a couple of his other books, but not this one. Let me know if you like it!

I’m reading On Beauty by Zadie Smith. Enjoyed White Teeth, and this was is shaping up to be a great read as well!

Just finishing up a book of short stories by Jean Rhys (author of The Wide Sargasso Sea) called Sleep It Off, Lady. As these strange, sad stories are semi-autobiographical, I really want to read a biography of her. My next book is Dhalgren, a huge sci-fi book by Samuel R. Delany. It gets compared to Joyce’s Ulysses a lot, so I’m not sure what I’m in for. . . .

I started reading this a few years ago when I received it as a Christmas present. I just couldn’t really get into it and it’s still sitting in my bookcase. I often see it there and think I should really read that! So perhaps I’ll try again :)

  6. Laura Z. says:

Fidelity — a book of very good book of short stories by Wendell Berry. I just love him — both his fiction and his non-fiction. Has everyone here read Radical Homemakers? If not, I really recommend it to anyone trying to live a simple life unplugged from the consumer capitalist mindset…

I just finished The Help and really enjoyed it. I found a copy of Christian Caregiving at a library book sale for $2. and picked it up since you recommended it. I’ve just barely started it.

  8. I’ve got a couple of books on the go, Adrian Mole- the prostrate years- Love sue Townsend and all the Adrian Mole books, so funny, this is the second time I have read this one, and The Victorian Kitchen by Jennifer Davies- this was a charity shop bargain and I’m really enjoying it. The pictures are fab and it’s full of so much information- it’s a great window into the past :)

  9. Sonja says:

I am enjoying a re-read of “Mindfuck” by Manna Francis. It’s for free on the internet but I liked it so much I decided to buy it.

    1) I’m reading “Living Simply with Children” http://www.amazon.com/Living-Simply-Children-Voluntary-Simplicity/dp/0609809016/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312610187&sr=8-1- a lot of great (though kind of obvious to someone already living simply) ideas for refocusing your life with children and put purpose and mindfulness into their lives.
    2) Saw this http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3010248448/tt0903624 thought of you

  11. Hi there! Your latest post showed up on my google reader and when I went to comment it had disappeared. Anyway… I just wanted you to know that I love your blog. It’s one of the very first I check each morning. I’m sure it’s weird to know that complete strangers look forward to reading you every day, but I find your blog so refreshing and inspirational. I’m also an adoptive mom to three amazing children and one on the way, so I’m so excited for you!! Good luck with everything!

    Leslie =)

  12. I’ve just finished reading the second book in the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R. R. Martin called A Clash of Kings. Rather than occupy valuable real estate in your comments with my review, if you want to read it, you can click here. Thanks for writing these posts that remind me to update people as to my literature excursions.

  13. Psychsarah says:

Glad you’re enjoying your book. I love Wally Lamb’s other two books, but found this one disappointing. I’m reading Love in the Time of Cholera right now. I’ve been meaning to read it since high school. It’s great so far :)

  14. Shani says:

Just checking in that all is well in your corner of God’s beautiful earth, FT. You’re in my thoughts and prayers!

  15. Diana says:

I am mostly posting just to say hello, as I just discovered your blog (in the midst of cleaning out my closet, I felt a need to see how many clothes other people felt they needed, and your blog on your wardrobe came up. Though I have removed about 60 pieces of clothing from my closet to donate, I am still not down to your amount. Good job!).So, hello, FT, I am enjoying and inspired by what you have to write here. Hope the long gap since this post is due to good things happening!
And, since this post is about what we’re reading, I am reading A Game of Thrones, by George R.R. Martin (not sure what I think of this one; it is definitely a page turner, but there’s a lot of evil in it, some of which I don’t think was needed for the story); and How the Special Needs Mind Learns, by David Sousa. Not anything really new to me in there, as I have been teaching “special needs minds” for about 25 years, but it is nice to have it in one place to review, as school is soon to begin. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us. Hope all is well.
