I made some major mistakes with my food this weekend, not realizing spelt contains gluten I ate it Friday, Saturday & Sunday - not a good choice. Add to that a walk in the cold on Friday & Saturday and a resurfacing allergy to corn, plus a new allergy to something in sushi and well let’s just say I’m covered in blotches on my face & torso, my face is on fire & my hands & legs are cracked & bleeding. All because I didn’t properly read the ingredients and got lazy! Stupid stupid me!!
So last night I made a decision – I went out & bought healing foods, things I wouldn’t normally buy. I decided my only goal this week was to be gluten free, I won’t be eating seasonally and I’m even going to have some fish. I simply need to heal my skin. I should also add, that many wonderful people suggested that there is probably something going on inside causing the reaction on the outside, I agree completely, but sadly at this time a naturopath and accupuncturist are not options.
So my non-vegan, non-seasonal eating menu plan this week is….
Breakfasts
- Yoghurt with flax seeds, almonds, sunflower seeds & cut up strawberries x 4
- Beans on gluten free toast, cut up orange slices x 2
- Gluten free pancakes, almond butter, canned pears
Lunches
- Cream of broccoli soup, cut up veggies with dip, apple slices x 3
- Baked potato, salad, apple sauce x 1
- Black bean salad, sweet potato, home canned pears x 2
- Leftovers
Dinners
- Salmon, rice, cabbage, kale x 1
- Kale & Potato bake, sausage, salad, brussel sprouts x 2
- Soya bolognaise, salad, veggies x 2
- Artichoke dip, sweet potato fries, stir fry veggies x 1
- Stirfry with rice, salad x 1
I hope with a little more thought skin wise I’m in for a good week and next week can go back to normal
I hope your week is full of good eats too!

I hope your eating this week causes less reaction and your skin recovers x
I feel for you and I hope your gluten free diet really helps you this week. If you need soaps/creams…I’ve just learned of this fab pumpkin soap made very pure esp. for problem skin. See here http://www.rockymountainsoap.com/productList/1015197/1000144 (and its fully guaranteed). I haven’t tried it yet but I intend to. I think the closest store to you is in Waterloo but you can order on line if you are interested and that might be quicker and easier for you. Blessings. xx
Thanks so much Joyful!!!
I hope your menu plan helps you to heal. It is so difficult to avoid some of the things that aren’t great for us if we have allergies. I pray that the discomfort goes very soon.
I agree with the comments above. I hope that changing your diet will help you to feel better.
Thanks all! I hope so too! No outside walks in the cold for me this week & no gluten which means I’ll actually take the time to read all labels
One positive FT, at least you know food allergies are causing the skin problem. I hope you recover soon with your diet this week.
I hope that the diet helps with your skin and that you feel better soon.
Also just wanted to add that I hope you have a lovely Valentine’s Day FT! Make sure and take a little time for yourself.
Sorry to hear that your skin isn’t very good at the moment.
I hope that the recipes you have told us about work wonders and soon heal your skin.
I can’t imagine what it is like to have such allergies and be in such cold temperatures.
Happy valentines FT!
Stacey x
I, too hope that your meal planning shifts the bad out and the good into your body. It is so difficult to know these days what is safe and what is not. I also suffer from allergies and have to make almost everything from scratch.
Have a peaceful Valentine’s day and may you wake tomorrow, eased and ready for life’s journey again.
Thanks Elizabeth!
FT, So sorry the spelt threw you off…. Hope your skin heals soon.
Here’s the good news – A naturopath will put you first on an anti inflammatory (aka elimination) diet. You could do that yourself without paying big bucks! The idea is to eliminate all major allergens – gluten, corn, soy, nightshades, dairy, eggs etc and eat only soothing anti-inflammatory foods for a month… then re introduce them one at a time, over a period of 2-3 weeks for each reintroduction.
Check this website, they have the whole plan laid out for you.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions ,FT. will be glad to help you.
Oooh thanks so much! Most of those I’m already allergic to! I’ll read tomorrow and let you know if I have any questions!
I’m gluten free since I’m a celiac. Here are some items to avoid at the sushi bar: the soy sauce ( I bring my own gluten free tamari sauce), anything that says it has crab –they often use the imitation crab which often has wheat in it — so no California roll, etc., no caviar –smelt roe, etc, because sometimes these have wheat in them as well. Nothing fried, no tempura rolls, you even have to ask about the spicy rolls, because some places put bits of tempura into it.
This really limits my sushi choices, and I hate that, but I’d rather be healthy, so I abide by it. I learned some of these the hard way, others by spending a lot of time at the Asian market reading ingredient labels.
Hope this helps! Oh, had an amazing treat the other day. Frozen banana chunks mixed up in the food processor with 1 -2 Tablespoons Nutella. Was like ice cream, and sooo yummy.
Oh Val I feel for you. I have egg, seafood and some grain allergies. Paradoxically wheat and gluten are fine for me. I love sushi but it isn’t very safe unless I am super vigalent. In fact eating out is a nightmare. I have taken to ordering pho whenever I can.
Hope your skin is on the mend soon. Here’s to always reading labels.
The food in your photograph looks amazing – what is it? chickpea and tomato stew over rice, with ?? (sesame seeds and aubergine, but I’m just guessing?)
I hope your no-spelt week helps your skin. And don’t beat yourself up for not knowing spelt contained gluten – we can’t all do everything all the time, and you achieve a lot! (your list of what you have done by 3pm on Sunday leaves me tired just thinking about it… I admire the way you manage to squeeze swimming/exercise into your days so regularly!).
The stewish dish had chickpeas, tomatoes & zucchini as it’s base. The salad is beets, tomatoes, seed mix, lettuce mix. There’s a bit of yoghurt on top of the stew & brown rice under
Yummy!
Yummy!!! and very healthy. Thanks for the recipe idea

Oh FT I’m so happy you are giving yourself a break. Please don’t be too hard on yourself, it can be hard to remember everything when it comes to restrictive diets.
So right to pamper yourself! Hope you are feeling better soon. I assume you’ve checked your sausage for gluten–it often contains fillers. I pray your cousin is recovering well from her surgery.
Thanks Mitty, she seems to be a tad fragile, which is completely understandable! My mum rang her today. For me it’s very hard with the time difference because by the time I’m home from work she is fast asleep!

What is your recipe for the potato and kale bake? Are you mixing the kale with cooked potato like a stuffed bake potato? Thanks for posting your menus and hope you are feeling better soon. Also, just returned from England for the first time. It is a beautiful country as your pictures indicated. Loved London!
