Things Happening At My House Thursday

Oh so much to report, which I hope will clarify my quietness in this space over the last week…

  • Remember the blanket above? Well that was made approximately 9 months ago, since then my knitting has been disastrous. This week I pulled out four things I’ve been working on for months and declared enough was enough. Thankfully as I explained my protest/indignation to a horrified onlooker {who was amazed to see someone so quickly emptying their needles} I found out about local knitting help group, suddenly I feel like maybe I won’t make the worst wife & mother in the history of the world ;)
  • My vermicomposter has been overrun with what I think are mites. There are thousands of them and I am reminding myself my theme for the year is punctuated equilibrium so I should be trying not to scream, cry or protest too much. I’ve called the vermicomposting hotline and am generally avoiding the kitchen until I hear back from them ;)
  •  I have finally admitted to myself that I am suffering from insomnia {and have been since August!}, now I need to fix it…!
  • I am not sure how it is possible to love Ophelia & Genevieve more each day but I do!
  • My course I’m taking {The Classics in English Literature} is wonderful!
  • I have 19 drafts set up but have had no time to proof read – I plan to get up several of them this week {and yes I know it is already Thursday…}
  • I have been writing my daily posts for my other blog but have had trouble uploading {I write them in word first} must fix that this weekend…!
  • My skin is still horrific but my hands have cleared up – what I’ve learned: pure shea butter from Africa works really well on my hands,  nothing totally works on my legs, having severe skin issues is expensive, wearing tight clothes at night {like leggings} helps somewhat, lanolin works on the chest area {who knew I’d have some of the same issues as nursing mothers thanks to eczema!}
  • Life is busy at the moment with work & paperwork
  • I loooove my job
  • I’m hoping this weekend I get major clearing out done & emails replied to!
  • I feel like I need to join some sort of a women’s sports group for a bit of encouragement in the physical activity when it’s minus 29 department!
  • I am very settled & happy but extremely exhausted & a little tired of playing the game “how few hours sleep will I get tonight?” Last night was a corker – 4 hrs!

What’s happening at your house this week?

Do NOT scare me like that…it is only Wednesday…you made me go look just to make sure! :) I’ll attribute it to your lack of sleep, and I will say a prayer for long and deep restful sleep and sweet dreams for you. hugs

I was too tired to set the post to go live at midnight so I published it 2 hrs earlier! Also two posts I had ready to go (Mon/Wed) never were published, so I wanted to make sure this one went out and I wasn’t going to stay up until midnight considering the night before (work) it was passed 1am!!!!!!!! Thanks for those prayers!

Hi FT, here’s a little recommendation for your insomnia. I suffered from it for over 1.5 years where, most nights, I was getting only 3-4 hrs of sleep. I had a very stressful job at the time and my cortisol levels must have been through the roof. Then I read this: ‘Say Goodnight to Insomnia’ by Dr. Gregg Jacobs. Within weeks, even if my external conditions didn’t change much (i.e. still had stressful job, worked extremely long hours, etc.) I was able to finally say goodbye, so long, ciao! to insomnia. That was five years ago. I hope it helps you as much as it did me. I love going to bed now, rather than dreading it. And the advice he gives is very easy to follow. Good luck. Bonne nuit/beaux rêves.

Thanks MJ! Oddly enough last night was OK, not great tho. For me it’s hormones my PCOS causes much sleeping woes, but I’ll get the book from the library! Thanks!

Nothing much is going on here at all, since I’ve been sick and nursing a sick one since last saturday! I did get a pattern out to make a purse my oldest has been waiting on since before Christmas but so far I’ve only acheived cutting the pattern out and looking over the directions! Can’t get much done when you can’t quit coughing! Hope your having luck with you insomnia! I believe I have it too. Most nights I get 4 at the most but on the weekends sometimes I sleep 12 hrs? why? I guess my body just gives out! But I’m here and I’m alive, and I have the freedom and the ability to complain about it. For this I am thankful! Albeit not as much, but none the less!

    • Frugal Trenches says:

Hope your cough gets better! I know a few working mums who barely sleep a few nights a week (1 am – 4:30) and then sleep 10-12 hrs a couple of nights a week. Works for them, not good for me!

I already wasn’t so sure about worms in the kitchen. I hope you will have cleared out the mites by now. I wish you all the best with your insomnia and hope you find some help. It is nice to go to a knittingclub where they can help you out when you have problems you can’t solve yourself.

    • Frugal Trenches says:

Thankfully they are contained & the mites have stayed around the box {mostly!}. Yes so excited about the club!!

  5. Fitzy says:

Sorry to hear that you’re still having trouble with skin, sleep, and the worms…yikes.

But glad to hear about the lovely kitties and your job! :)

P.S. Glad Mr. C. does not consider ability to knit an indicator of a good wife/mother! But to be fair, I don’t consider the ability to knit an indicator of a good husband/father, so I feel that’s fair.
P.P.S. And you know what? Your blanket is in J’s crib right now! :) Still looks gorgeous! Thank you!

  6. Mitty says:

Though knitting is productive, it’s not supposed to be some sort of benchmark of worthiness–it’s supposed to be relaxing! There certainly is a learning curve, however, so I hope the group will be fun and help you technically so you can relax into it. That cute blanket proves you have it in you! Re: the worms, try adding more shredded, moistened and wrung out paper to the top of your farm. I find that the food scraps have to be well covered up to keep the insects down and the scent earthy rather than sour. Fortunately, this helps me get rid of my shredded documents, bills, etc. Good luck!
I sympathize with the insomnia, as I suffer with it from time to time. You have a lot going on in your life right now, so it must be hard to unwind. Hope it resolves soon!

  7. Insomnia is the worst! Have you tried Valerian Root? It is the only thing that I’ve found to help on a consistent basis

  8. cj says:

    Hello FT,

Your blog came up in my Google alerts for vermicomposting. Just wanted to say that mites are an indication of a bed that’s becoming too acid. A sprinkling of oysters shell flour in the feedstock or adding more finely crushed eggshells should remedy the problem. All the best to you.

  9. Maria de Miami says:

This comment is a bit overdue because you adopted them some time back but I love your kitties, I think it is great that you adopted them and raised awareness for the fact that so many homeless animals are waiting to be adopted. They also have lovely names and are beautiful. Thanks for the photos and posts!

  10. Diane says:

For a while I had trouble sleeping because my mind wouldn’t shut up at night. Recorded books solved that for me. I’d get involved in the book’s plot (instead of my own story) and go right to sleep. The downside is that I never hear a whole book straight through.

  11. Kay says:

    FT,
Have you considered going on a glutenfree diet?? That excema and pcos make me think it might be a gluten issue you are going through. I highly recommend going on a Anti-inflammatory diet for a month and then reintroduce wheat and watch if that triggers your excema.

My naturopath helped me understand my gluten intolerence and that anti inflammatory diet played a big part.

  12. Shani says:

    Hiya FT~

Fellow eczema sufferer here. Last spring it came back with a vengeance after the worst stress in my life to date (as you probably know, stress is a trigger for eczema). Couldn’t do a thing because my hands were out of commission – not even crochet (gasp! lol). Did a little research because it had been so long since my last flare up, and discovered we eczema sufferers are deficient in zinc and Vitamins B and D. Fish oil also helps. So, I upped my dose of fish oil, took my B-complex and D regularly, and slathered zinc oxide ointment (what they use for diaper rash) on my hands. Cleared it up fairly quickly, and it hasn’t come back since. Of course, the stress has diminished greatly, so that helped. Just a few thoughts for you in case you didn’t already know. :) Feel better, sweetie!
    Blessings on your Sunday,
    Shani xxx

Thanks all! I think I need to totally cut out gluten, begin taking Vit D & Fish oils and enjoy a vacation in the sun ;) [wishful thinking!]
