A Birthday Wish – Delurk Please

This is a big weekend. It is my Birthday weekend and my last weekend in England until Christmas! And while I’ve chosen not to celebrate my Birthday this year I have one Birthday wish I hope you will indulge me in, if you read this post in your reader or via the website, even if I know who you are, in real life or blog land, would you do this gal a favor and delurk (which means leave a comment)?  Over a 24 hour period this week I had over 3900 people read this blog, I think I probably know who maybe 100-150 of you are and while I think the world is a lovely place, I’ll admit sometimes it freaks me out and makes me question just how much I should share on here…

If you’ve never left a comment on here it is quite simple, just click on the bit at the end of the post that says comments/leave a comment or gives the number of comments, you then enter your name (which could be anything, you don’t need to leave your full name, some people sign in as T or A or frugalmama etc) and your email address. Your email address won’t be published!

Anyways, from a girl who is not celebrating her Birthday this year, who is functioning on 2 hours sleep a night due to hayfever and preparing for a major life change, would you leave me this little tiny gift? And in return, feel free to ask a question in the comment and I’ll try to answer as best I can! Thanks!

And you’ll be pleased to know that my son’s partner has now been discharged from hospital and is doing really well. Thanks for your prayers and encouragement during her hospital stay

And know, that although I don’t comment often, I do read always, and it’s gals like you that have convinced me to finally teach myself to knit (2 scarves almost finished, I just need to find the book to learn how to cast off! LOL) :)

    Hello there,
I don’t comment much on any blog as I am always in a rush but as it is a very special weekend for you and because I really appreciate your blog and what you share with us I just had to comment today.
Everyday is a gift and should be celebrated but from reading your blog I think that you already share my feelings on that one.
I hope that you get to sleep comfortably, that your life change brings you all good things and that the kindness that you are sharing brings joy to many more people.
    Have fun.
    Love and best wishes

  21. caslass says:

Happy Birthday, you share so much with us that the least we can do is share your birthday. Since I took a “gap” year before official retirement your blog has been the starting point for my day and long may it continue. Yorkshire will be a poorer place without you for the next few months!

  22. shadowlite says:

I’m a long time reader stepping out from behind her RSS reader and delurking to wish you a very happy birthday!

Through your blog you provide such a unique voice on caring, empathy, common sense and thoughtfulness in all your actions. Not to mention your beautiful photography that you share. You are an inspiration.

I hope you enjoy your last weekend in England for a while and wish you safe travels.

Happy Birthday! I’m not a frequent commenter, but have said hello before, so not technically a lurker. Have you brewed up the nettle tea yet for that hayfever? I know some people really find it helps, but I’ve never tried it myself. Makes sure you have some thick gloves to go harvesting with…!

  30. Tania says:

    Hi there,

Happy birthday FT. Hope you have an enjoyable day.

I have commented a few times on the odd occasion when I felt I had something to add to the current subject.

Safe travels, wherever you are off to.

  33. megan says:

I’ll bet you get inundated with delurkers. I enjoy reading your blog and hope you have a happy birthday.

  34. Oh, happy birthday! I hope you start feeling well, re: the hayfever. That has to be terribly frustrating. Hopefully wherever you’re going will have less allergy effect? One of my friends used to have terrible allergies (esp. to animals) but the Lord cured her of it! I’d say that’s the best natural healing!!

  35. Kris says:

I read you every day, first blog of the day! Happy Birthday!!!!

And where in the world are you going that you won’t be back until Christmas? Inquiring minds want to know!

    Blessings,

Happy Birthday from Pennsylvania in the USA!

Thank you for being such a wonderful example of letting your light shine for the whole world to see. You have given us much food for thought on how we can let our light shine, also. Hopefully we will be just as brave as you are in following His plan for us.

Please keep us posted on the next adventure the Lord has for you.

  38. Melinda says:

Good morning Frugal Trenches from the US in South Carolina!! Just wanted to wish you a happy birthday! I don’t ever comment, but you are one of the first blogs I read each day. You are such a blessing to me. Thank you, and God bless.

    Melinda

  39. Jenni says:

Hello, and happy birthday even if you’re not celebrating! I do apologise if I am one of those who freaks you out while lurking – I must confess that I read in on so many blogs that if I commented on them all all the time I’d have no time to do anything else! But I will comment more frequently… Are you able to tell us more about your adventure? Seems like you’re off so soon!

    Good luck!

    xx

  40. Suzan says:

Happy birthday and lots of love too.

  43. MaggieMc says:

Happy Birthday. I believe that you are headed our way so I can’t wait to hear about your adventures here.

  44. Katie says:

Happy Birthday from a very shy lurker! I hope you have a wonderful day even though you aren’t celebrating. I always look forward to your posts and find them to be such an inspiration. I check for one every day and don’t mean to frighten you with my lurking ways. I’m just quiet.

Thank you for sharing such a lovely blog!

  47. Helen says:

Happy Birthday Frugal from Havana, Cuba!

I don’t read many blogs but every morning I switch on to read The Guardian, The Independent, Telesur, Al-Jazeera and….Notes from the Frugal Trenches!

What seemed to start out as a financial blog has taken you on an amazing journey and I’m sure there are lots of us who feel privileged to have been along for the ride.

I only commented once – after the earthquake in Haiti – but I can tell you, thanks to your example, I now sponsor a little boy in Haiti through SOS Children’s Villages and am planning to sponsor another child in Palestine as soon as I can. (Not forgetting donations for the orphanage you mentioned here, of course).

I am officially delurking to say that I hope you continue to inspire us with your words, actions, and photos and may you have a safe journey wherever you go. (You will be keeping up the blog, right?!)
Take care and keep on keepin’ on,
    Helen

  53. Kaytee says:

Happy Birthday, FT, all the way from Vermont (USA). I found my way here from a link on another blog I regularly read, frugalbabe.com. As someone who desperately needs to downshift her life, I have enjoyed reading and been inspired by the changes you’ve made in your life.

I’ve also adopted your weekly menu planning and grocery shopping strategies. Due to certain allergies and the price of food here, I’ll never get as low as you (my husband is a big eater, but he also has a very physically demanding job and likes his vegetables, so I’m not complaining), but you’ve helped get my grocery bill under control. Because of this, we’ve been able to pay down our debt more quickly and find room for charitable donations in the budget.
    ~Kaytee

  54. Anna says:

Happy, Happy Birthday! You deserve the best – I love your blog and want to thank you for your postings. They are always mindful and sweet. Thank you for all you do!

  55. Happy Birthday from the consumerism enforcement branch of the economy czar division of the government. We’re just keeping notes on derisive folks that can live happily with less because we can’t have THAT spreading around now can we?

    LOL. Kidding of course.

  56. Alice says:

De-lurking to wish you a happy birthday! All the best! :)

  57. Looby says:

I feel like I have regressed to lurkerdom recently, I’ve been so busy, I barely have had time to read your updates nevermind comment on them.
I promise to be better again after this long weekend.
Have a very Happy Birthday! and if your out of England travels bring you in my direction, let me know!

  58. Tracy says:

  62. Laura says:

    Hi!

I’m a Catholic homeschooling mom who adopted one of my daughters from foster care when she was a teenager. Now she’s in college and I have a five year old at home! I spend much of my time teaching, reading, baking, cooking, and coaxing good things to eat out of the ground.

I started reading your blog because of my interest in frugality/simplicity/anti-consumerism, but was delighted to realize that you are an advocate for the rights of orphans. I’ve also loved your series on 100 ways to save money.

Thanks for all you do, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Laura from NC (first time delurking :) )

  63. Cathie says:

Birthday Blessings! You are a sister in Christ to me. So in a way I know you. Thanks for all the tips, encouragement, wisdom you share so frequently. I don’t comment real frequently but I check in very often to see what you are doing. I appreciate your perspective so much!

  64. bethh says:

hello! Happy birthday!!! I mostly lurk but read you most days. I wish you’d share a bit more details, truthfully, things like: what country were you volunteering in, where are you going now, how does that work with your job, didn’t you mention a newer job or promotion recently? stuff like that – but I know that privacy is precious. So how’s your sweet people-food-eating kitty?

  65. KC says:

I’m a lurker, too. Your thoughts make me think. It was inspiring to read about your recent trip. Happy Birthday from Canada.

  66. Kay says:

  69. Rachel says:

Happy Birthday! I recently stumbled upon your blog & have been spending loads of time reading past entries ever since. :) I never leave comments on blogs of people I’ve never meant…so know that you’ve really touched me. Thank you for your love for Jesus and people, your kindness, and for sharing so much goodness and kindness with the world.

    Much love.

    Rachel

    Lisa

  72. Deb says:

I’ve only been reading your blog for a few weeks. I enjoy reading about all your money saving techniques. I am trying to downsize and simplify my life but it’s a bit harder when you’ve been busy accumulating for 35 years but I am doing it a little at a time.
Also wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday. And did I miss you writing about where you were going?

  73. Rachel K says:

Happy birthday! Have a wonderful last day in England.

  82. Billy says:

Happy Birthday Frugals! Thanks for all the work and care you put into this wonderfully inspirational blog, it has really motivated me through some difficult times.

As a Brit living in California I love the beautiful photos of England’s west country.

    Good luck with your travels!

Well there it is, I have delurked :)

  83. sarah says:

Hope you have a lovely birthday , even if you choose not to celebrate in the traditional way. Spend some time with the sea?

My one question is where are you going and why have you not emailed me about it ;)

  84. Kathryn says:

Happy Birthday FT!!! I hope you have an awesome weekend!

I’d love to know how you balance privacy with being public. I always wish you would tell us more but then I think about it and realize you know nothing about us yet we know so much about you, which seems well a bit like we are taking something from you without giving anything back. When I think of it that way I really think you do need privacy! lol

My other question is, are you living the life you always thought you would live?

Again a big Happy Birthday to you!!!

  85. Happy Birthday! Hope you have a wonderful weekend doing whatever make you happiest, even if you are not technically celebrating. J xxx

  86. Jackie D says:

    Happy birthday!

I live in New York City and found your blog via my Kiwi friend Jacq’s blog. I was so moved by Monroe’s story and photo, cried and prayed for him and was so happy to learn that he has found a family. I’ve been thinking so much this week about adoption, thanks to you. I just applied to volunteer as a one-on-one mentor with foster children at a care facility here in NYC, motivated by Monroe’s story on your blog. Thank you so much.

  87. Kim says:

    Happy Birthday!!!

I lurk alot of blogs & rarely comment-usually if something really grabs me that I must do or if I feel I have something to add.. or if its requested :) so here you go :)

  88. GC says:

My old Bermudian classmates sang a happy birthday song that was set to the tune of the hymn “When He Cometh”. I hope you know that one as I consider you one of the pure, bright ones.
    Safe travels.

  89. paola says:

    Happy birthday, nameless girl.
I started reading your blog a few weeks ago and I have been coming back to it several times to remind myself of some of the things I should be doing, like buying less stuff and give more! I also found the 100 ways to save money precious and your commitment to orphan babies touching. Paola

  90. Elizabetta says:

Happy Birthday FT! Your blog is an inspiration for me. You share a lot, which I appreciate. But there is also a lot you don’t share and then I don’t understand what you are up to. Or is it because English is not my first language?!

  91. Ann says:

Happy Birthday to you! I found your blog through Simple, Green, Frugal Co-op, and what a treasure it is! Thank you for being such an inspiring, compassionate, wonderful human being. I wish you all the best.

Happy Birthday! I’ve been reading your blog faithfully for the last year and I have to admit though I don’t know your name, I pray for your frequently. My husband and I are in the process of adopting and often you’ve kept my spirits up as we’ve journeyed through this process. We live in the US and are adopting domestically. We’ve completed our homestudy and are now waiting for our little one to complete our forever family. We’ve never no problems with fertility but decided adopting first is just right for us. Thank you for all you do for the little ones around the world waiting for their forever families.

Happy Birthday FT, from Brisbane, Australia. I hope your allergies clear up and you have a wonderful day. I have been reading your blog for over a year and cannot remember how I found it. What I enjoy most is your posts about healthy eating and meal planning.

    Kylee

  108. Stacy says:

I’m addicted to your blog…finally put it on a blog list on my own blog, so that I’d catch all of your updates…instead of checking in several times a day (creapy huh??)

I’m a 37 yo, mother of 4, and am amazed sometimes what I have to learn from such a young woman who isn’t a full-time mom yet herself. But please, keep posting away……You encourage me to dream and change.

    Stacy in Texas

  109. Marci says:

Happy birthday from Minnesota, USA! I discovered you by accident searching for a similarly named blog and peek in (OK, lurk) from time to time because I enjoy your view on life. I admire positive people with a vision who don’t condemn others for not embracing the same life they do. I’m frugal because I would rather spend time at home with my children than to work longer hours for expensive vacations and designer coffee. I wish you well in your quest for a family… mine brings me true happiness.

  110. coli says:

Hi there and happy birthday. I’ve been following your blog for a little while now. I don’t know how I stumbled across it, maybe from always reading Down to Earth. Wow girlie! You’ve done a helluvalot with your life. That is fantastic. I bet your soul was touched deeply with your recent volunteering trip. Amazing to have such a kind heart and strong soul to help thosevless fortunate.

Have a wonderful Birthday! Many happy wishes bestowed upon you! :)

Happy birthday!! I’ve never left a comment, before now, but love your blog. Keep up the good work – you inspire us! Phebe x

  121. Colleen says:

    Happy Birthday!!!
I admit to lurking around occasionally lol. I love your blog and try to pop in often. My biggest problem is I love reading people’s inspiring blogs so much that I usually rush from one to another about 15 minutes before rushing out the door to pick up the kids from school and thus never get a chance to comment.
My goal is to make more of an effort to say at least thank you lol.

Happy Birthday from Australia… I can’t remember how exactly I came across your blog (through some sort of finance article perhaps?) but I like your style of writing and gain inspiration from you. I can’t say I’ll ever be as frugal as you, but it certainly challenges me to think :)

  125. Ping says:

Happy belate birthday FT!! When I first came upon your blog I immediatly read all of your previous posts. You’re such an inspiration, thank you:)

  126. Kate says:

Happy Birthday from New York! I discovered your blog via Down–to–Earth (I think!) – - – but we share a common passion for international adoption. I am blessed with four children, three by birth and one through adoption from Ethiopia. I cannot wait to adopt again… but I deeply admire your commitment to all the orphans of the world, and not just the lucky child who will one day call you mother. Adoption IS a incredible blessing – - – but it isn’t the answer for the millions of children who have no families. I admire your devotion to those children, even while you dream of the day you will meet your own. Best Wishes!

  127. Erin Wilson says:

Happy Birthday from Canada (not terribly far from Toronto, as it happens)!

I find your blog incredibly encouraging. And… to be completely honest… makes me super curious about all the bits you leave out. lol. So for the sake of my nosiness, I hope you’ll share a few of those details :)

Praying peace for you, as you continue to follow your Lord with all of your heart, all of your soul, and all of your strength.

Have a happy birthday and a wonderful year of change, growth and inspiration. May you always have a special goal to aspire to, and enjoy the path along the way to achieving it. Even if you’re not “celebrating” your birthday per se, I hope you get much pleasure from our community’s gift of response! We look forward to hearing from you and appreciate you for being here. Much love and good wishes.

  131. Nan says:

Happy birthday from California! Love your photos and your spirit!

  132. Jennifer says:

Hello and Happy Birthday! (even though you’re not celebrating…:)

The blog world is an odd place .I just stumbled on your blog and am enjoying your views on things from food to frugality to Colin Firth (I won’t wax poetic about my mildly unhealthy like him, too. Sigh for Mr. Darcy). I’m walking a similar path on this side of the pond. How random the world can seem (even though I see His order in that chaos) and nice that strangers can connect in a positive way though the Internet.

    Cheers and God Bless!
    Jennifer

  133. Pat says:

Our Lord will honor that with protect, the answers when you don’t have them, and more joy than you can stand!!! You will be giddy with watching how your Savior has ever detail ready for you. Again the most happy of B’day weekends. Pat

Happy Birthday Weekend! Delurking from Japan… check your blog most days….love your frugal ways. And if you are trying to figure out what kind of people read your blog I’m not sure how I’d fit in the demograph…Irish married to Japanese…4 children born in 4 countries…all mine…though I was asked once in a Cork restaurant if I’d got them from China! Where are you off to? Safe journey….and please keep up the blog if possible.

    Hi, delurking from Australia.

Whilst I only just found your blog, I have enjoyed reading the bits that I have. I remember the first post I read was your list of about a million things you had to do, I soooo felt that was me!

I remember bookmarking your blog & naming it ‘Best Blog Ever’ – good luck with whatever is coming your way & happy b-day!

Cheers to a frugal life well lived!

I first discovered your blog via the co-op when you wrote about paring down your shopping bill which gave me pause for thought. Much of what you write still does that- where does one so young get such wisdom?

Hope you had a good birthday and a better night’s sleep!

I hope that you will have an opportunity to truly reflect and pray about this past year in your journey of life. Look at all you have accomplished and also look at what you have been able to share with the many many people who visit your blog and are interested in your message.

God has given you the gift of compassion. Your gift to God, is what you choose to do with your gift.

De-lurking here. I came across your blog a few weeks ago, and have already read up to here. It’s heartening and inspiring, and has led me to seek out a few volunteer opportunities as well as start giving more to charity. You’re truly an amazing person.

Happy belated birthday from Newfoundland, Canada! I am a rather shy lurker, but wanted to let you know how inspiring your posts are :) I am taking steps towards my own downshifting journey (gardening, scratch cooking, baking and sewing) and your blog is full of encouragement and great ideas!
