One Hundred Ways To Save Money Part VIII

For Parts 1-70 please see here

71. Use low energy light bulbs! I read an article this week which said one family saved £70 ($120) a year simply by switching!

72. Keep your heat lower in the winter by wearing socks to bed and a sweater in the house

73. If you can then limit your air conditioning, if you can’t at least be willing to dress lightly! I’m amazed at people who wear sweaters in the summer by keeping their house so cold! The colder it is, the more money it costs!

74. Keep your house tidy, that alone reduces the desire to have a cleaning service or home help!

75.  Volunteer! Such a great social activity, it helps others and gives you a night out for free! There are so many ways to volunteer, I’ve mentored, tutored, run a youth group, walked dogs, socialized cats, done admin for a hospice and worked with children in a hospital and a school! There really is something for everyone!

76. Find free hobbies like hiking, walking, knitting, sewing etc. Okay technically knitting costs you in wool, but that is a lot cheaper than dinner out with friends!

77. Rent out a room in your home! This is a great and easy way to bring in extra income for minimal extra work!

78. If you don’t have an extra room all year round consider taking a summer student!

79. Have a movie night with your friends or your mate, instead of going to the cinema! Everyone can bring a snack to share (popcorn, fruit slices, veggies and dip, cheese & crackers, chocolate) and it is as fun as going to the movie theatre!

80. Ask for vouchers and certificates for Birthdays and Holidays! I always ask for these and it saves me a huge amount of money through the year. Knowing I can see two films for free, enjoy 4 drinks at a coffee shop and eat 2 free meals at my favourite restaurant makes me be a good steward and make wise choices! Is that movie worth using my free voucher for is a typical question I ask myself!

  1. #80 I cringe at Christmas time because of what the family has bought me. I don’t usually need anything and I’ve always appreciated practical gifts, so I am amazed at what they give me (often good, sometimes random). I will definately be asking for vouchers to specific shops/activities for the future. Thank you for this tip. I’m following the series closely and adapting them to fit my life in Australia.
