One Hundred Ways To Save Money Part III

Please see Part I (1-10) here and Part II (11-20) here

21. Shop around for a mobile/cell phone and think about your “needs” vs the highest number of minutes and texts!

22. Consider going mobile-phone-less, it works for me :)

23. Consider having no landline – for some mobile/cell phones are more convenient and their package means they don’t really need a home phone!

24. Shop around for internet - think about what your usage is and buy a package that meets those needs only!

25. If you see cheaper phone/internet/tv deals call your supplier and tell them, I did this recently and my bill was reduced from £13 to £6 a month!

26. Buy phone cards/use internet phone programs - international calls cost about 10 pence a minute from my landline, but with my phone card they cost about 2 pence per minute and each month there are 2 countries I can phone for free! Of course I won’t judge the success of the cards by today, as I was talking to my friend Michelle and the phone card would cut us off every 8 minutes!!! Poor Michelle had to cope with my phoning 5 x ;)

27. Always, always, always keep lights off that are not needed! I am always amazed at friend’s houses when we’ll be in the dining room eating and the dining room light, kitchen light, hall lights downstairs & upstairs and some of the bathroom lights are all on!

28. Lower your water temperature on your boiler/furnace!

29. Wash dishes only when you have a full load! I should add here that I have never had a dishwasher!!!

30. Shower instead of bath! I know there is some controversy over which uses less water, for me hands down showering takes less water! I shower for less than 5 minutes and it uses about 1/8th of a tub!

Wasting power drives me crazy too!
My son asked if we could have “Earth Night” last night. He thinks it’s really cool to get to sit in the dark together. I’m working hard to encourage him to be green.

As for water usage, I’m looking at installing a low water use toilet. I’m on a well for water, but I hate the waste toilets create. Reducing water usage helps the environment and our budgets.
-Also we keep rain barrels to collect water for our garden and shrubs.

I often see homes with outside lights on that are obviously just to make the house look pretty to people passing by. A very expensive and wasteful decoration.

  3. I’m guilty of the lights thing. Sometimes we’re lit up like Blackpool here.
