Be Still My Beating Heart

We’re back. Thank you so much for all your advice, concern and support! Well, I’m forever grateful to the friend who fought traffic to get to my house to pick up me and the Kit Kat and get to the vet. Oh what an ordeal it was, a kitty in a laundry basket (lying down on a pillow and covered in blankets). The vet took one look at me (ever so upset!) and her (stiff in pain & now crying – oh how distressed she became the moment we stepped into the office!) and said it would probably be best if he examined her without me there (a true gentleman I tell you!). He and the nurse strapped her down and looked and poked and prodded and found (covered by her fur under her belly) a total mouth bite mark on the side of her tummy, which had missing bits and pieces of her skin and flesh! Very hard to find he said, but quite shocking to literally find skin missing in the shape of a mouth! She also had a dangerously high fever!  Antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and pain relief by injection (no sign of abbess yet, thankfully) and we were finally on my way. He was so tender with her, once she was back in her basket she even let him stroke her (he was a different vet to the last one and much more gentle!). I’m so glad I listened to my instinct this afternoon and didn’t wait until tomorrow as the nurse suggested.

A couple of hours later my little love bug is moving, she’s cooler, she’s calmer and while she still is off her food, she did allow herself to be hand fed about 1/4 cup of cold custard. Bless her tender heart!

And my heart is finally beating at a semi-normal pace. It’s ever so hard not being able to explain pain/treatment to animals and babies. My poor poor girl!

And yet already tonight she’s a tad brighter, and while she can’t move too freely yet, a couple of days from now she should be back to semi-normal!

And my weekending plans? A lot of kitty loving & snuggling, a very long hike (I can’t wait to get the camera out again!) & charity lunch (I’ve been treated!) tomorrow with friends and on Sunday I plan to begin running again!

There’s nothing quite like weekending! What are your plans?

Oh you poor thing – just catching up with this. Always best to trust your instincts with poorly animals. Hope she makes a speedy recovery.

  2. Looby says:

Yay for lovely vets! Give your kitty an extra cuddle from me, I’m so pleased that the issue is identified and being treated. I hope she has a speedy recovery.
    Enjoy your weekend!

Glad you’ve got it sorted out. That sounds really nasty- no wonder she was in a state!

  4. rachel says:

so happy to hear Kitty is going to be Ok. I hope you had a treat after the traumatic experience for both of you.
chocolate and some nice wine would be my prescription for you lol.

  6. Mitty says:

So glad to hear you took her in and that the treatment already has her on the mend! It sounds as if the experience with the new vet was not as traumatic as previous ones despite the nature of the injury. I was amused by the list of her favorite foods. My sister had a cat who had to eat a raw people food diet, but I never heard of a cat who likes grapefruit! LOL

  7. Chris says:

Trusts your instincts, and you did. :)

I’m glad your cat made it through the ordeal, and it was a great friend to come to both your rescues.

Thanks for letting us know how she’s going. I bet you feel better for getting the help, rather than wondering what you should do next. Your second vet sounds like he had a closer affinity to animals, and probably a bit more experience with the nervous ones. ;)

  8. Anna says:

It really is best to trust your instincts – your girl is just beautiful! It must have been so hard for you when you saw her in pain like that. She is very lucky to have you for her Mom – very lucky indeed! I’m so happy for both of you that you had such a gentle soul today for your vet and that he found out what the problem was. Wow- she is one tough little gal!!

  9. Valerie says:

I am so glad to hear she is doing better! I hope you both have a lovely weekend!

  10. Aydan says:

I’m glad the vet found out what was going on and was able to treat it, and I’m glad your kitty is feeling better, and that the visit was less stressful than previous ones! I hope you have a lovely weekend, especially with the cat-snuggling!

  11. My heart goes out to you and your kitty! We have a 19.5 year old here, who is usually ok but this morning seemed ‘a bit off’ -not eating, not moving well. We have found a vet surgery which will come out to us ‘when the time comes’ so that she does not have to be traumatised by a trip to the vet.

Enjoy your lovely weekend -hope all goes well from here on in.

  12. Michelle says:

That’s exactly what I thought, based on the many cats I have dealt with…so glad you took her in! Poor baby, glad she is on the mend!

Aww bless her good to hear you got to the vets and they took good care of her, the antib’s and pain relief should work wonders and hopefully she is a different kitty again today, please give her a snuggle (and some pasta treats hehe) from me xxx

  14. Diane says:

So glad that you found out what was wrong with kitty and that she will be on the mend. Looks like you are going to have a good weekend.
    Blessings

I really had to steel myself to read your post as I know how traumatic it can be when a pet is ill and how useless you as an outsider can feel. So what joy to discover that things are on the mend and I wish you a joyous and restful weekend.

  16. Karen says:

i’m so glad your kitty is on the mend!! poor baby!!

  17. Lisa says:

So very relieved for you both that she’s ok.

  18. Wow-so glad you could discover what has been wrong and I hope for a quick recovery. How interesting that she likes veggie people food–love it! Am glad that you were able to find such a wonderful vet. Hope the weekend of recovery for kitty and mum goes well!

  19. Attila says:

Good news. Give her lots of snuggles.

  20. Caena says:

    Good!!!
    Trust your instincts..
And great that she will be doing better.

    This weekend? Work, and work..
Perhaps some knitting or crocheting. …

  21. Chiot's Run says:

So glad she’s doing better. It’s always scary when there’s a problem and we don’t know what to do. It’s hard to know how they’re feeling since they can’t tell us.

I’m sure she’ll be feeling better in no time thanks to your wonderful care.

  24. Melaniesd says:

Wonderful news about Kitty! It’s amazing how quickly the body can respond to antibiotics.

Saturday I had the pleasure of taking 3 little boys to the theatre to see a musical play of Franklin the Turtle. They loved it!

Today I enjoyed a leasurely walk with my son & MIL near an old military fort here on the harbour. We took the dog and let him run to his heart’s content. We met some lovely little dogs along the walk (and people too!). I took my camera. It’s not easy getting a picture of a running springer spaniel! It was nice to get some fresh air. Now, I’m just weaiting for ham dinner to finish cooking.
