I’ve been much more conscious lately of what I eat for breakfast, I became aware I needed to after noticing I was hungry and craving food that wasn’t so good for my body within an hour or two of breakfast. Breakfast is a meal I struggle with due to my allergy to eggs, my need to really limit my wheat intake and my disdain for salt (a lot of breakfast cereals are just filled with salt & sugar – on a side note it is salt awareness week ). I struggle with yogurt, but have found as long as I add a lot of other ingredients to my yogurt and choose a thicker yogurt (Fage is the favourite), then I’m usually happy.
Lately my breakfasts have been a mix of yogurt, a couple of fruits (my current kick is grapefruit and blueberries), seeds, peanut butter (for protein), seed mix & flax seeds. It sounds like a lot, but it is a small portion of each! I cost this breakfast out at around £0.50 (around .94 cents US). Now who says healthy food can’t be frugal?
What’s your favourite breakfast?

Our all time favorite breakfast is a fruit & green smoothie. I just throw in the blender whatever fruit I have on hand, like a banana, some blueberries, strawberries, add water, and blend. Last I throw in a handful of greens like baby spinach. I also often throw in a handful of ground golden flax seed or spirulina. The girls love it, and I make these about 3 times a week! Your bowl of fruit looks so good. I just tried your soup for dinner, and we all enjoyed it, thanks!!
Oh Michelle, that sounds delicious! I must must must have more smoothies! I’m glad you liked the soup!!
Haha, everyone’s on a kiwi craze at the moment! I still don’t like them though… sticking to my weetabix!
Kx
oh but they are sooooooo good! lol Actually I didn’t used to like them much, but I find with peanut butter it is easier!
We were just talking about how we couldn’t imagine not starting our day without our porridge now!
I too can’t eat wheat, sugar, blah blah blah, but oaty porridge, made with stewed fruits is the best thing for us. I batch make the stewed fruits for the whole month & freeze, so it’s pretty easy in the morning, and no fruits wasted.
It’s quite sad but we are excited this week because plums are on offer, so I will be making stewed plums, which is our favourite topping, but tend to find them too pricey normally.
oooh that’s great about plums!! Stock up and freeze is always a good idea if you have some wiggle room in the budget?
It’s summer here, so it’s home-made Bircher muesli: oats, sultanas, some flaxseed oil and a spoonful of linseed soaked in orange juice and water overnight. I add Greek yogurt, blueberries and flaked almonds (even nicer if I bother toasting them in the frypan!) in the morning.
Loretta that sounds amazing!!
I am looking forward to reading the responses. I, too, am allergic to egg as well as some other foods and I find I cannot tolerate huge amounts of grains. I am so thoroughly over breakfast as a meal. Every morning I cook eggs for my daughter and wonder what on earth I will eat.
Suzan I can really relate! Hopefully you got some new ideas from here!
Ooooh delicious that sounds very healthy and full of good flavours! I tend to not be so adventurous with brekkie but maybe i should try being so, it’s usually toast in our house, but i do love a good Full English as a treat or Pain Au Chocolats or crumpets and peanut butter mmmmm very naughty!
oooh don’t tempt me!
I love Scottish oatmeal, with a little milk and honey. I’ve been trying out different oatmeal recipes, and apple blueberry has been our favourite so far. In the summer we do lots of smoothies, and nothing beats homemade yogurt with spiced, stewed prunes.
I am just starting to enjoy prunes!
I love natural peanut butter slathered on apple slies–fruit and a little bit of protein is an ideal breakfast for me.
oooh that sounds wonderful, I’ll have to try that!
I never thought of adding PB to my yogurt. I like to throw it in with the bananas when I make my smoothies, but never thought of just adding it to my mix ins. Also with yogurt I buy a local yogurt and then strain it (to make it thick like greek yogurt) and I like to add in coconut flakes and honey.
Great tip, thank you!!!
peanut butter in oatmeal is great
have you tried corn tortillas? If you can have corn and you have some leftover beans and rice, a little salsa to top it off makes a breakfast with bite!
Sadly for a long time I was allergic to corn, I’m much better now although don’t eat it too frequently!
All that fruit would make me hungry too – it goes through the system too quickly! If it’s only wheat you want to avoid, not all grains, try Holland & Barrett’s gluten-free muesli. That with a banana will keep you full until lunchtime with no problems. It’s not expensive, either.
Actually, the breakfast I posted fills me for hours, I think it’s the thick yogurt and seeds. I’ll try that, thanks!!
I bet that is very energy producing with the seeds and protein. I usually have toast with orange juice or cranberry juice, I should eat healthier.
That is is M! I too like cranberry juice!
Lately I too have been on the smoothie kick…it’s so easy for before work. I throw a banana, sunflower seeds or pecans, 1-2 Tbsp honey, a sprinkling of flax seed, a packet of Emergenc-E, frozen fruits, a dash of cinnamon, and a cup of milk into the blender….and voila I have an instant nutrient packed and healthy meal. Add a cup of coffee w/ some delicious creamer on the side and I’m good to go. Other days when the husband and I want to do something together we usually do pancakes or french toast….but those days are farther between now.
oh thanks, I think tomorrow I’ll be having a smoothie!
Oh this looks soo yummy!!!! It makes me want breakfast for dinner!!!!
lol I always said when I have children at least once a month we’ll have breakfast for dinner!
Hmm, that looks delicious!
I have porridge at the weekends but stick with a gluten free cereal during the week to save a little time in the mornings.
I can’t go without breakfast, but also find it hard to eat too much- I like to balance it with a yoghurt or some fruit for elevenses!
I can relate, I’m not a breakfast food person but need it to balance blood sugar levels etc!
I forgot to say that my usual breakfast is cereal, I need to change that! LOL
Hopefully this gave you some ideas!
ooo, that looks yummy, and very healthy and good for you
that it is
You all are so healthy! Me, I have to have a bagel and a scrambled egg on it… I work a 10 hour day 4 days a week and if I don’t have that in the morning I am completely useless.
Well it sounds yummy!
that looks like a yummy breakfast. I am a cereal fan in the morning, or if I have made muffins I like a couple of those……
Gill in Canada
I so adore muffins but really much prefer the ones in North America to England!
Let me be totally honest and say…bacon and eggs. Come on! So yummy. Greasy, but yummy. I love breakfast places! Though I only have that once in awhile during the weekend. Usually it’ll be a yogurt, fruit and tea. Or if I have time, I’ll get an everything bagel with veggies and a slice of cheese.
lol that is good for protein!!! I enjoy bacon probably once a week!
During the week my fave breakfast is oatmeal with dried cranberries, a large teaspoon of crunchy peanut butter and soy milk. Yummy! On the weekends it is eggs and what ever leftovers from dinner the night before with toast. By candlelight in the winter, out on the patio in the summer.
Karen from CT
Karen that sounds AMAZING!!!
Oh, that looks so tasty! Yogurt is a favorite of mine, though I never would have thought to add peanut butter to it!
Try it, it will not dissapoint you!
i’ve been on a kiwi kick lately, too … did you know you can eat the skin? i do! it’s a mess to peel and cut otherwise …
ever try a tofu scramble? i have a good vegan french toast recipe ….
… oatmeal with dried fruit and maple syrup and wheat germ and flax etc ….
…why the other day i just did stir-fried tofu and baby bella mushrooms … i’m not a “breakfast food for breakfast” type person anyway, i’m a rebel!!!! hehe.
during the week i try for a container of soy yogurt, sometimes with granola, and a homemade (mostly) baked good. i love pastry/biscuit type stuff long’s i know what’s in it. as in, i made it.
try stirring sunflower seed butter and TAHINI (another kick i’m on, lately) into stuff … .tahini is high in all kinds of good stuff like iron but it is higher on the sat. fat end so just watch that. good protein etc source these are ….
and i love a green smoothie, too: fruit of your choice, raw collard greens chopped up, unfiltered apple juice, a drizzle of maple syrup, some hemp protein powder, some flax seeds. serious YUM. and quite filling, too.
homemade hummus on Ryvita crackers ….
this might help you expand on “breakfast” a bit … i hope! best of luck to you!
lol I do not think I could eat the skin!! I will be trying some of your ideas!!
or just eat a whole avocado drizzled with tahini!! YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM <3
Now that sounds like my kind of food!!!

FIRST POST ALERT!
I’ve been enjoying your blog from America. I love to mix a low-fat, low sugar, high protein instant oatmeal called Quaker Weight Control with my favorite yogurt. One pack of Maple & Brown Sugar with peach or vanilla yogurt is yummy. I also add fruit , usually a banana because it’s filling, and with my cup of tea or coffee I’m good until lunch and I never ever snack.
I recently lost 45 lbs eating this way and my blood work came back today as super duper healthy (low cholestrol, low trigycerides, low blood pressure, healthy red blood count).
Keep up the good work! PS–I’m also out of work.
Andrea that sounds absolutely delicious!!!
