Give Me A Home

The fiendly, soft brown and white hamster was found in her cage at the side of a road in Walthamstow, London, on Sunday. There was no note - just a bag of sawdust by her cage. Southridge Animal Centre: 0300 123 0704

I read an article yesterday about the high number of pets needing homes at the moment, animals abandoned often after being purchased for Christmas!  I also read a very sad story about animal cruelty! Sadly, I don’t have a home currently in which I can open my doors to some of these special furry ones, but maybe one of my readers does! In the meantime, I can of course volunteer at an animal shelter and buy animal food to donate  :)

I’m amazed that the message ‘A pet is for life, not just for Christmas’ still hasn’t sunk in. I’m allergic to fur and feathers so I’m not much use I’m afraid.

I hate ill-treatment of animals, makes me truly sick. Wish I could give a hamster a new home though – they’re lovely animals.

we were fortunately enough to be able to adopt two rescue cats, and they are the best thing that’s ever happened. We’ve gain lovely companions. I would highly recommend it to anyone who can give homes to these lovely animals :)

Stories like this always make me cry – I still don’t understand how people can be so careless both to animals and to other people.

My husband and I adopted an abused dog from The Humane Society (similar to RSPCA in but in Canada) 11 years ago. It still angers me to think that someone hit him and then abandoned him, but I try to focus on the joy and comfort he has brought to our lives. I never understood why people spend hundreds/thousands to buy purebred animals, when there are tons of lovely animals who need homes at shelters

so sad. SO sad. one of my dream-future castles-in-the-sky includes half a dozen rescue dogs. i think you can tell a lot about society by how it treats its animals…stories like this break my heart :(

p.s. have you ever thought of volunteering as a dog-walker? it’s something i’ve been toying with for ages but never lived near enough to a rescue home to help. i still don’t, really, but now i have transportation it might be something i’ll consider doing once a month or so…

My friend works for the RSPCA and often has sad stories, many more so at this time of year. :(

Buying food to donate to any animal charity is a lovely thing to do, keep an eye out for smaller, local charities as well as the larger ones, they often don’t have the money behind them for publicity but need help just as much. For example, I know of a group who take in wildlife – from deer through to sparrows – and they are often desperate for donated items.

Our two cats came from the RSPCA, as well, but many years apart. One of the big problems is that people don’t get their pets neutered and then they do what comes naturally! The RSPCA do ask for a donation when you adopt; it varies from branch to branch but our male two years ago was on a £30 donation (we gave more). He had already been microchipped, de flead, tested for FIV/FLV, had the first jab for the regular enteritis and so on and for FLV (leukemia), plus a voucher for neutering and the second innoculation. £30 doesn’t even cover all that!

  10. My husband and I were able to move in together in June (he’s in the Army and I was finishing grad school). Since then we’ve adopted 3 pets (2 dogs, 1 cat) to join our home. All have been adopted from humane societies and both dogs have needed substantial vet attention even coming from these “humane” sites. It’s sad, but we’re glad to at least have provided 3 pets with a loving, warm place to call home. I’m sure once we’re eventually settled w/ a place w/ more land we’ll convince ourselves to get at least 1-2 more pets as well….

such a cute face, how could anyone not love him for life.
We also have the “” pets are for life, not just for christmas”campain here. But unfortunately people still dont get the message. I wish I could take them all, but alas I can’t.

It breaks my heart. It really does. How can a human take an animal into their home and then treat them so cruel? There is no lover like the love from a pet.
I’m not going to read the linked article. Not because I want to be ignorant but because I’m very sensitive about it and it will be on my mind all day. I am very aware of what goes on around us.
I would love to adopt another dog but right now my son is 4 and I don’t know that I would trust a dog that may have been abused around him right now. Perhaps if the right dog was presented.
