What’s A Girl To Do

So suppose you found yourself bed bound, a sight not fit to be seen by anyone’s eyes, a coughing, spluttering mess. Suppose it is snowing outside and you want to be out there making snow angels. In fact you are absolutely jealous of the children out there doing that very thing. And you decide you have to do something to spend away your time. Do you

a. Find barn ruins that you would like to purchase and try to beg convince a friend he should purchase it for you? Of course in it’s current state it looks less like the house above and more like this:

b. Make plans for said house which include fairy lights, a book room, an aga, a great dane, an open fireplace, vases of poppies and peonies, a velvet couch, a nursing chair, a roll top bath, a house filled with cushions (embroidered ones), baskets of wool, the Bible & Love Letters OF Great Men on the nightstand. Spent an hour visualizing the ponies, cows, chickens, sheep and lambs that would have shelter in the field.  There would also be a veggie patch, a secret garden, hundreds of beautiful watering cans and wellies by the door.
c. Decide when you are a Grandmother, you want to be called Umi after seeing it on a pair of shoes
d. Download a free e-book soup, stews & chilis
e. All of the above?

Yup e. What can I say, it was a great day. And what would be even better is if someone purchased the barn for me, you know it is impossible to get a mortgage without a job. ;) And if you buy me such a house I will allow you to visit my library whenever you like. It will be filled with the classics.

A fair bargain? Yes?

That house is gorgeous, in fact it’s my dream house. Glad you were able to have such a wonderful afternoon, keep dreaming such wonderful things.

  2. shoestringalley says:

I love that cottage too – it’s one of my favourite things about ‘The Holiday’ (that and Cameron Diaz’s hair)! Maybe if you get the cottage Jude Law would pop over and make you some of that hot chocolate with mini marshmallows on top…

    • Frugal Trenches says:

Yes it is wonderful isn’t it? I am so sad it was built and then destroyed. Never noticed Cameron’s hair, did find her character quite annoying. Much preferred Jude and Kate’s characters. Brit I am ;)

  3. GC says:

nice new place if only in your mind
    thanks for the ebook hint

  4. Ah day dreaming- a wonderful occupation! It has become such a pejorative word and it really shouldn’t be.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts
    Jen

  5. Now that is one cozy library–daydreaming is sorely underrated.

  6. Anna says:

This post has made me laugh tonight (much needed!)

You could also get that gorgeous George Clarke (think that’s his name – Escape to the Country presenter) to help renovate it…….

  7. Chiot's Run says:

What beautiful photos, I really really love them, even the old broken down barn. Often dreaming is better than the real thing, and it’s cheaper.

  8. lucid says:

Instantly recognized “The Holiday” cottage! Can’t believe they tore it down. Didn’t they know you wanted it?!

    What’s an aga?

    Hope you’re feeling better.

What a lovely idea! I think you should do it up big time, with a library and large fireplaces and snug cozy chairs with footrests and lots of blankets. It seems as though there will be someone to make you food while you have time to read. A girl can dream. :)

  10. Joyful says:

Yup, I recognized that cottage too…what an idyllic place :-) I do hope you also get the cottage of your dreams as it sounds delightful. And, hopefully you’ll let me visit, lol.

  11. Kathryn says:

I hope and pray that this year all your dreams come true. You deserve so much more than you know!

  12. cherie says:

I LOVE that cottage!! Im with you on the daydreaming thing..apparently it IS the way to tell the universe you want something..
I think Im coming down with the lurgy too. Its high summer here, hot as hell and muggy, ut still I have some kind of ronchial cough that rips me in two and sounds like a dog barking!! I can only wish that I was tucked up in bed with a good book and some sewing, but the house is a mess and I have my two and two spares creating much holiday chaos!! Enjoy the dreams they will surely come to pass!1
    Love Crafty chery

    Love your daydream…the house…that library…even the barn.

I live in a community that has strong German roots. I know quite a few grandmas around here that are called ‘Omi’ (an endearment of oma). I always liked the sound of that. But discovered that no matter what I thought I’d like to be called, whatever that precious baby called me, I’d jump to answer! :) We tease my sister, because her first grandson called her Gabaga for several years, and she loved it.

Hi, I’m a long time reader of your blog, but never posted before, so hello! I love your blog :)

I hope your flu is not to severe, I too am laid up in bed with something cold/flu related :(

That library look gorgeous, my OH and I dream of having a room like that.

  15. rachel says:

Haha, great! I love to daydream too…at the moment my dream involves working remotely and not having to leave my house in the cold and the snow to drive to work…hehe! ;)

And if you did acquire such a cottage, I would come and visit. Paid vacations, yes? Who needs a job?! ;)

  16. Oh, that sure is a lovely daydream!

I hope you’ll be (a lot) closer to achieving your dreams this year. ;)

  17. Melaniesd says:

That library just makes me want to grab a nice cup of herbal tea, some bread and jam, and a cozy blanket – and a book of course! With no distractions… Ah to dream!

  18. M says:

Your best blog post yet, thank you for the laugh!

  19. Krista says:

You are so adorable! :-) Your dream barn sounds perfectly wonderful and made me smile and dream a bit myself. :-)

  20. sarah says:

The library should of course include a big comfy armchair and a real fireplace :)

  21. Tina♥ says:

Ooh, it all sounds wonderful. If I could have an Aga I would have a lovely red one!

Oh and I think Umi is the most wonderful granny name I’ve ever heard. I want to be an Umi too.

    love, Tina :)
