Dartmouth, Tim Hortons, Food & Skin – Oh My!

What a day! It started with a yummy breakfast – purposely light as I was having an early lunch!

dartmouth-002

Cucumber, hummus, cheese & grapes with a tangerine juice on the side!

Lunch was yummy!

dartmouth-004

Steak with strawberries – sadly that nausea kicked in (took the meds too late this am!) and it didn’t stay down!

I then set off on a wonderful outing with a friend, to Dartmouth! Oh how fabulous it was to see it in it’s glory!

 dartmouth-040

Ooooh isn’t it magnificent!

dartmouth-044

If I had these views I honestly don’t think I could go to work ;-)

dartmouth-053

I wanted to stay forever…!

dartmouth-080

Spring is well and truly here :0)

dartmouth-087

I wanted to sit here and read a book for hours, so did my friend!

dartmouth-0911

There were many adorable tea rooms throughout Dartmouth!

dartmouth-023

And of course the famous New Angel restaurant – owned by Michelin Star chef John Burton Race!

dartmouth-123

Saying good-bye was oh. so. hard!

Until I was driving along & saw a sign….

dartmouth-126

TIM HORTONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who knew it was in England? AND DEVON OF ALL PLACES! Now it’s just a little counter in a petrol station, but still Canada’s best export (after CBC) ;-)

Of course I had to….

dartmouth-128

Seriously amazing…..!

Of course I couldn’t resist a little treat!

dartmouth-129

And then my friend and I headed back home to enjoy a 2 for 1 meal at Wagamama! My most favourite restaurant!

wagamama

I had ginger chicken udon with no egg!

It was quite a bizarre experience as I bumped into a guy I went to school with, which is over 150 miles away! And we were both in Wagamama at the same time on the same evening and happened to catch eyes across a very busy restaurant! Strange!

As the day went on my “eczema” got worse, after dinner my mouth got itchy so I decided I had no choice but to head into the walk in centre! And it turns out it isn’t my eczema but a severe allergic reaction! I was very very quickly given anti-histamines to take straight away and I’m now on 5 days of no wheat or gluten, followed by 5 days of no dairy and if neither is the culprit then we will look at strawberries, tomatoes & avocado! One good thing about blogging your food intake means it is easy to see what you’ve eaten!

The exciting news was that my friend is going to let me help her budget and live more frugally! I can’t tell you how excited I am about it! I’m starting her on my jar system and can’t wait to see how successful she will be!

Exercise : walking through Dartmoor! I had a lot more planned but slept in, took meds late etc. Tomorrow is another day!

Tomorrow will be exercise (a run, swim & 2 hour walk), Church and catching up on blogs, I am far too behind!!

That’s so funny that you found a Tim Hortons, my friend was visiting the UK and Ireland last year and found a Tim Hortons in Dublin Zoo of all places!!
You’ve also reminded me to visit- I’ve a free donut to claim!
I’m glad that you made the trip to the walk-in, hopefully the antihistamines will help and you’ll find the food culprit soon.

Tim Horton’s?! In the UK?! Talk it up, Frugal! It could catch on! :)

Now, I have to say this is the first time I have been here. Found it through Canadian Saver.

Okay, that said. Cucumber for breakfast? I can see you are on a mission to loose weight but how can cucumber be tasty in the morning? I will have to try that one day. I am always willing to try anything at least once.

Last, great shots. Hard to believe you are in England, it looks more like southern Europe or someplace else.

Tim Horton’s??? We got Dunkins and Krispy Kreme so I have no clue how good they are. Thanks for an entertaining post.

    I shall return.

OH! You’re my new favorite blogger fyi

  7. Lisa says:

    Beautiful photos of Dartmout.
And that doughnut looks good too!
Hope you get to the bottom of the allergy soon.

  8. I thought Tim Hortons was only here in Canada!! How awesome!!

I will admit, your coffee sleeves are much more attractive than the ones here!! ;)

  9. Elizabeth says:

My Mum can get a very nasty reaction to strawberries and they’ve made my sister quite unwell lately too. I can’t eat any imported strawberries as they must be sprayed with something which gives me an instant migraine. So, all in all, strawberries seem to be quite difficult little devils!!

My partner was told some years ago not to eat tomatoes more than once or twice a week as apparently they can make IBS flare up in some people. Hope you find out what’s causing the allergy real soon.

  10. Amanda Brown says:

What’s your jar system? Sounds intriguing!
Fabulous website – a real inspiration.

  11. Chantel says:

Hi mate, what an experience you had today! I’m sorry you had the allergic reaction :( – I’m glad you were sensible and went to get checked out and got the anti-histamines before anything bad happened.

Oh your walk with your friend looked so lovely! You’re photos are wonderful, made me feel like I was there for a moment. I feel so peaceful near the water and like you, would find it so difficult to go to work with a view like that!! ;)

It’s funny, you running into your old school friend like that. It’s happened to me a few times. I live in Sydney now and grew up in country NSW and I always find it amazing when I run into someone I know because the school is 500km from here.

I felt so happy for you reading your friend is interested in letting you help her live frugal! I love helping people too and I know how much this would excite me!

You’re doing great with your weight loss too! I hope you enjoy your run and swim and walk tomorrow :)

PS I love a good coffee too! I haven’t heard of Tim’s though… might be one to try when I get to the UK!

    *hugs*

  12. Oh I hope you find out soon what caused the allergy!!

Tim Horton’s eh? I must be the only Canadian who doesn’t like their coffee. Not at all… But I LOVE their donuts, their sandwiches, the bagels, the chili, their soups, etc etc. I just find the coffee horrible!

  13. mordtechin says:

    Wow…

Your photography taking skills and cooking skills are quite amazing. Looking at your photos always makes my mouth water or moments of tranquility which I always welcome.

I am really sorry to hear about the allergy and hope you are able to determine the root cause and is something that won’t disrupt your diet too much or is something you will miss terribly.

    Take care!

ps. I love hummus and like to make mine with a little spicy kick on wheat sandwiches with spinach, tomato, and red onion.

  14. Jen says:

Nope, Canadian Saver…I am most distinctly a Canadian who has absolutely no love loss for Tim Hortons, AT ALL. I USED to like their doughnuts, etc., until they made the change a few years ago to quit making them on site (and just ship in the premade products, which they “brown and serve” on the premises…absolutely no comparison in taste or anything to what they used to have), and I’ve never seen the attraction to their coffee. Considering that I don’t even think they’ve been Candian owned for quite some time (probably around the same time they changed their baking practices), I don’t get the whole attachment to them at all. AT ALL.

FT, it strikes me as completely odd how much I’ve read about gluten and its connections to many illnesses of late…everything from irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease, to all sorts of autoimmune diseases (arthritis, etc.) to liver problems, diabetes, kidney problems, and autism… It’s something I hadn’t ever thought was a problem, except for celiacs, and now all of a sudden it seems to be linked to practically everything! It’s actually something I’m testing out about my skin conditions, too! Crazy.

  15. an ostrich named sam says:

I LOL’ed when I read you finding a TIM’s. Your meals look really good this week. I hope you can found out what your allergic to and quick. The worse part of food allergies is that they can happen almost over night.

I hope you feel better soon!

  16. Money Funk says:

Are you allergic to possible MSG in your ginger chicken or possibly sesame seeds or peanuts in your ginger chicken. Those are usual culprits.

  17. psychsarah says:

When I read your title, I thought you had visited Canada-we have a Dartmouth in Nova Scotia and obviously, lots of Timmies! I see that Roll up the Rim is not offered in the UK-oh well, you can’t have everything!

  18. Great to catch up on your blog and I’m glad to see that you’re doing well over these past 5 months. I’m about to go to Devon on a cycling holiday, so once again we think alike!

  19. mo says:

hey lass – sorry to hear about your allergic reaction. hope you find the culprit.

am also intrigued by this jar system….

  20. Lazy Susie says:

There’s an ocean between our countries, but we’ve both lived in Canada and both dined many a time at Tim Hortons. It was long ago for me…17 yrs.

  21. Maria says:

Lovely lovely photos! I’m sorry to hear about your allergy, but you should feel pretty good with your weight loss! Thanks for sharing your meal ideas! You always inspire me to try new things. As I start working again soon, would you be able to share any ideas about a healthy and frugal lunchbox? I always end up taking the same old tired sandwich with me at work…
    Thanks,
    Maria

  22. Gill says:

what gas station was the Tim Hortons in? I’ll have to tell my mother as then they’ll be looking out for one as they love Tim Hortons when they come over……

    Hope you feel better soon,

    Gill in Canada

  23. Amanda E. says:

Well I am pleased that Frugal Trenches has a canadian connection (I knew this was why I loved your blog so much!!!). How about I send you some Timmies coffee in return for walking around Dartmouth, Devon … oh your pics are absolutely wonderful.

Daughter and I just had our usual Sunday Timmies and I won a free coffee (it’s roll up the rim time). So now tomorrow before work I will proudly present my free coffee and enjoy every sip of it!!!

I myself have a lot of allergies so can relate. I noticed that you eat grapes a lot. Ensure you wash them very carefully as the sulphites that are sprayed on fruit seap into strawberries and grapes. I found out several years ago that I’m severely allergic to sulphites and have now changed my eating patterns. No wine, no pre-packaged frozen foods, need to watch crisps, etc. Perhaps you could get some allergy testing done?

  24. Melaniesd says:

Frugal, when I read your title I thought you were in Nova Scotia for the weekend! We have a Dartmouth here and of course a Tim Hortons. I’m no lover of Timmies either, but it would be a pleasant suprise to find one in another country.

I’m sorry to hear about your reaction. Do take care.

  25. Sarah says:

Oooh, Dartmouth – I think i went there with my mom when I visited her in England a year ago – we took the ferry across the water. It was beautiful!! Here in Michigan, we got a dusting of snow last night, sigh!
Thanks for the photos – I love seeing them!

  26. sonrie says:

    What a pretty seaside town!

  27. sonrie says:

PS – I hope you are feeling better. It is no fun to have an allergic reaction…your food did look tasty, though!
