Saving Money While I Work

I’m amazed already at how my spending has changed since I began this journey. While I may not have had £30K dept, I was headed on a deep dark road and while I still have a ways to go, I’ve already noticed some changes for the better. I’ll share more at the end of the month when I look at my income and outgoings, but one tip I’d like to share is how I’ve saved money at work.  This is a strange concept as working costs money, but here’s 5 changes I’ve put in place to maximize my savings and minimize my spending!

1. I keep note of the time and food provided at meetings, conferences and workshops. Often I would forget that a certain meeting included lunch, now I mark it in my diary and on my calendar at home. This means I don’t need to worry about breakfast/lunch/dinner on a certain day, and with an average of one meeting a week that includes a meal or light bites, this is probably saving me £4 = $8 a month!

2. If I am invited to an impromptu meeting which includes a meal, or I forget that lunch is included. I keep my packed lunch in the fridge at work. This means I don’t bring it home and graze on it and I don’t have to worry about lunch the next day!

3. I have my morning coffee at work. I now start the day with a glass of water and have gotten into the routine of having my coffee sitting at my desk checking my emails. Each work place is different: some you pay into a kitty which means you have open access to hot drinks, some you pay per drink, mine is all included. This means I haven’t needed to buy coffee this month. I’m amazed at how easy it was to change my routine.

4. I charge my work phone (mobile) @ work. I find if I do it at home, I end up forgetting about it  and charging the phone for longer than needed. At work, I charge it on my desk and 30 minutes later it’s done. Better for my purse and the environment (and remember it is my work mobile)

5. I check my emails in my lunch break. This means I’ve been able to go down to a more basic plan for the internet at home as I’m not using it as much.

I know these are little changes, but I’ve worked out I’m already saving about £10 = $20 a month with changes that I don’t really notice!

Some of these may sound extreme, but my mantra desperate times call for desperate measures really holds true!
