Firstly my apologies, I am currently dealing with a broken computer, hense my quietness!
As part of my attempt to embark on a major financial overhaul, stick to a budget, build my emergency fund, start a private pension (I am currently trying to get my head around SIPP’s) and save for a major deposit on a home, I’ve started to really keep the phrase a penny saved is a penny earned in my mind during all transactions.
I’ve been addressing areas where I could save more and making sure I get all money owed to me. This week I decided to be bold and ask my new employer to be started on a higher scale for my salary. I booked a 1 hour appointment with my manager, discussed my findings during my induction, shared the skills I felt I would be using to make major changes for the organization and then asked if there was a possibility of starting at a higher grade, due to the responsibilities I have and the work I will be putting in to complete a new business plan for the organization. Surprisingly, my manager commended me for the work I have put in so far, we discussed the skills and abilities I have and she agreed to a £2000 increase in my yearly pay (pre tax). She also said that if I was able to make my targets, she was looking at putting my name forward for a promotion in September.
Sometimes, if you’ve done your homeworkand made the right impressions, it really is a question of just asking!
Next post – another 10 tips for affording a yearly holiday. I just used 2 of them and saved 50% of the cost of a seaside holiday this summer!

Congrats on the productive meeting! Here’s to asking for what you’re worth
By the way, I used to think that the quote “a penny saved is a penny earned” was a great one too… but I’ve modified it a bit. Now it’s “a penny saved is two pennies I don’t have to earn.” Given taxes on everything coming in and taxes on everything going out and the interest rate for keeping that penny in a high yield savings account, it works out about right. haha
Keep up the good work.
Hey well done! It never hurts to ask- the worst they can do is save no! Here’s to finding more way to save those pennies…
Only just found this blog and so haven’t yet read ALL of it. I’m not sure whether you have come across a website called
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com which is run by Martin Lewis. If not, do head of the Moneysaving Oldstyle part of the Forum – many like-minded people there!
There’s also plenty of posts from DFWs (debt-free wannabees)
Good luck with everything.
Thanks Ladies!
p.s. thanks for the link Sandie, was thrilled to find another UK blogger!
